Voters Pick Mayor, council Seats

Congratulations to the May 2023 Bloomington primary election winners,
who will move on to the general election in November.

The May 2, 2023 Bloomington primary election saw the highest voter turnout in decades, with roughly 8,000 votes cast. Voters elected the nominees for mayor and council, who will advance to the general election on Nov. 7.

Here’s a rundown of the results:

Bloomington Mayor: Kerry Thomson. She is the Democratic Party nominee. No Republican ran for mayor in the primary, and so far no Independent has filed the necessary documentation to appear on the November ballot.

Bloomington Council District 1: Isabel Piedmont-Smith. An incumbent, Isabel Piedmont-Smith is the Democratic Party nominee, and so far faces no challenger in November.

Bloomington Council District 2: Kate Rosenbarger. An incumbent, Kate Rosenbarger is the Democratic Party nominee, and so far faces no challenger in November.

Bloomington Council District 3: Hopi Stosberg. She is the Democratic Party nominee and faces Republican Brett Heinisch in November.

Bloomington Council District 4: Dave Rollo. An incumbent Democrat, he was unopposed in the primary and so far faces no challenger in November.

Bloomington Council District 5: Shruti Rana. She is the Democratic Party nominee. So far there is no challenger for District 5 in November.

Bloomington Council District 6: David Wolfe Bender. He ran unopposed in the Democratic Party primary and so far there is no challenger in November. The Monroe County Election Board has set a May 18 hearing on the issue of his residency.

Bloomington Council At-Large: Isak Asare, Andy Ruff and Matt Flaherty. There are three at-large seats on council, and these three Democrats were the highest vote-getters among a field of seven. So far there are no challengers in November.
