Cold Weather Trauma Training

Heading Home partners with South Central Housing Network
on workshop for front-line housing security staff

Over 40 people gathered on Jan. 18 for a Cold Weather Trauma workshop hosted by Heading Home of South Central Indiana and the South Central Housing Network.

Heading Home’s Mary Morgan welcomes participants to the Jan. 18 workshop at the Monroe Convention Center.

Dr. Drew Watters, an emergency medicinephysician from IU Health, described the underlying physics of heat and cold, and reviewed how to identify and treat cold weather trauma, including frostbite and hypothermia. He also provided free first-aid kits for the event.

Also part of the program was Abby Wantz, a nurse practitioner with HealthNet’s Homeless Initiative Program (HIP). She gave an overview of HealthNet’s street medicine in Bloomington and examples of her work treating patients.

The workshop ended with a visit from the Indiana Chapter of Canine Companions, who brought puppies to help attendees de-stress. They are looking for volunteers in this region to be “puppy raisers.”

Special thanks to our Cross-Agency Training Committee and Heading Home interns Lizzy Wright and Shay Berry for helping organize this event!
