Celebrating Quality Data
Heading Home’s community event highlighted milestone toward ending homelessness.
Heading Home hosted a community gathering on Sept. 24 to celebrate reaching Built for Zero’s quality data milestone for South Central Indiana.

The event, held at the FAR Center, featured three Built for Zero coaches who have been helping this region with data quality, veteran homelessness and other initiatives. Built for Zero is a national effort working with over 100 communities to end homelessness. South Central Indiana is the only region in Indiana to be part of the Built for Zero movement.
The quality data milestone is for all single adults, including veterans and those experiencing chronic homelessness. This milestone signifies a comprehensive, real-time data source that tracks homelessness across the region — a key step toward solving homelessness and reaching the community’s next goal of functional zero for veteran homelessness.
As part of this effort, Heading Home created a public data dashboard that provides monthly updates on housing placements, the number of people experiencing homelessness, the length of time it takes for someone to find housing, and other metrics about homelessness in this region.
By-name data, updated monthly, provides a comprehensive picture of homelessness in our community and allows us to make data-driven decisions to move people more quickly into safe, stable housing.
The South Central Indiana region covers Monroe, Morgan, Lawrence, Owen, Greene and Martin counties.
Built for Zero coaches — Tia Lurie, April McKie and Marney Thomas — traveled to Bloomington on Sept. 23-24 to mark the achievement of quality data. They also led a workshop, hosted by Heading Home, for partners working to end veteran homelessness.
