New Data Gives Insight to Homelessness in Indiana

Number of unhoused residents increased statewide but dropped in region that includes Monroe County.

Statewide data released in September shows an increase of homelessness in 2025, but a decrease in the region that includes Monroe, Morgan and Lawrence counties.

The annual Point in Time (PIT) Count took place in January and the data was provided by the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority (IHCDA) on Sept. 8.

The data is broken down into regions within the Balance of State, a category that includes all Indiana counties outside of Marion County/Indianapolis. Region 10 is the region that covers Monroe, Morgan, Owen, Lawrence, Greene and Martin counties.

In the six-county Region 10, 421 individuals were reported in the 2025 PIT, compared to 456 in 2024. That’s a 7.6% drop in unhoused residents for this region. In Monroe County alone, 305 people were unhoused in 2025, down from 350 in 2024.

In the entire Balance of State area, 4860 individuals were reported unhoused in 2025, compared to 4398 in 2024. That’s a 10.5% increase.
